Do you want to help your child start a business, learn about money management, and entrepreneurship? The Complete Starter Kit from The Kingdom Code can help with that!
My family has spent the last several weeks reviewing this amazing kit. Here’s a quick overview of what it is, how we used it, and what we thought.
Bottom line? It’s a fabulous, kid-friendly resource that walks children through the process of starting a business.
What Is Included in The Complete Starter Kit?
This product is full of resources your child needs to think through business ideas and start one. In The Complete Starter Kit, you’ll find:
- A textbook written directly to the student
- A student pack (consumable, you’ll need one for each student)
- The teacher’s guide with lesson plans for all of the lessons
The Student Pack was incredible. It included:
- A receipt book
- A KCK treasure map and stickers
- KCK budget stickers
- Flash cards
- Posters
- Forms
- Notices
- Worksheets
- Activities
All of the papers come three hole punched, so it’s easy to plop them into a 3-ring binder. Here’s a peek at some of the materials (before it got put into a binder! :D) The papers are colorful, and there’s plenty of variety.
Additionally, I was given a Kingdom Code Coloring Book and a KCK Budget Pack. These items are not included in The Complete Starter Kit, but were used in conjunction with it.
Make Some Time for Setting Up
If you order The Complete Starter Kit, you likely will be overwhelmed by the sheer number of materials you received. I felt super confused at first, especially since I had some of my kids checking everything out.
Don’t do that! Your pages will get out of order. And it’ll take even longer to prepare.
Instead, I recommend making some time for setting this up before you show your kids how cool it is. (Because it is super kid friendly and fun to explore.) Get a three-ring binder and put everything in there. Invest in a pack of dividers, to help keep everything organized.
Then, once you are a bit familiar with all of the pieces, share it with your child.
How We Used This Product
I agreed to review this product with my ten-year-old son in mind. It’s written for kids and young teens, and helps them start a business from the ground up. Since my teenage daughter already has her business idea in mind, and is a bit older than the recommended age, I decided to use it with this guy instead.
After working through the initial lesson on brainstorming business ideas, he really wanted to start an outdoor help service (mowing lawns, stacking firewood, etc.). He opted to call it Jeff’s Helping Hands.
The material covered in the first several lessons all helped him get a better understanding of economic principles, business plans, and how to market. The first several lessons (about the first semester’s worth) are fairly parent intensive. But, they are so thorough.
We worked on it twice a week (with a few weeks only being able to do one day). Each day’s worth of material takes about 45 minutes to get through. We went a little faster, as there are some things meant for a group setting that we skipped. You can definitely adapt to meet the needs of your child.
At the end, your child will have a researched, intentional business plan along with some marketing ideas. It’s incredible!
The Student Pack
This part is really the goodies of the curriculum. It contains the items your child needs to think through a business plan, marketing, and so much more.
The pieces in this product all tie together. For instance, here’s a worksheet asking students to think about their potential customers, their competition, and how they can differentiate. It asks them to consider where they could advertise (which we left blank because we live in the boonies and it asked them to focus on places they could go without transportation help.)
On this worksheet, the students were asked to transfer information to their business plan, and to complete other worksheets.
The Textbook
The textbook for The Kingdom Code is colorful and written directly to students. It’s engaging, colorful, and clear.
One thing that I really appreciate about this material is that it integrates Christian principles so clearly throughout. Students learn that they can use their God given talents to create a business, and learn how to run a business using biblical concepts. For instance, students learn to be bold and trust God in lesson 7.
The concept of being wise stewards of money is also integrated.
The KCK Budget
The Kingdom Code Kids (KCK) Budget pack comes with tools to help students learn to use their money wisely. This program recommends students give 10%, save 15%, spend 5% on others, put 10% towards education, and spend 60% for themselves.
The budget pack came with stickers to decorate zipper pouches. We still haven’t purchased the zipper pouches though, so my child is using simple envelopes for now. We will upgrade in the future.
There’s also a poster to help teach kids these concepts.
This system uses the acronym JOEYS. It’s slightly different from the previous system we use with our kids, in that it accounts for education and others.
The Coloring Book
Since this system is designed for kids in upper elementary school and middle school, it seemed odd to me that there was a coloring book. My son didn’t care to use it, so I found it a fun way to involve a younger sibling. They could sit in on the lessons and color, and hopefully learn a bit through listening.
The coloring pages typically have a key principle at the top, and a Bible verse on the bottom. The image is related to one or the other, and is typically medieval themed (to go along with the knights concept.)
Teacher’s Guide
The Teacher’s Guide is meant to go in a 3-ring binder as well. It provides the details on how to use the different pieces, and how to teach each lesson.
There are goals for each, key terms to cover, and then explanations of which pieces to use. It really helps you tie everything together! Once you get your system set up (so you know where everything is) it’s fairly simple to gather everything, open it up and go.
What I Thought
I was really impressed by the quantity and quality of this product. I’ve run my own business since 2015, and I still learned some new things. The Sales Code is awesome!
I appreciated the thinking it required, and the solid foundation it provides. It really is a great product to help your kids start a business of their own. I’m really looking forward to going through the rest of the material with my son and watching his business (and economic understanding) grow!
