It’s important for elementary kids to begin learning about their state history. That’s why I was thrilled to see Chronicles of __ State History Notebook as an option for a review with Hewitt Homeschooling Resources.
I knew this would be a fun project for my son. He’s in fourth grade – the age when I remember tackling state history for the first time in school.
What Is This Product?
Chronicles of _ State History Notebook is a three-ring binder filled with a collection of worksheets that help students dive into their state history. The pages are set up in such a way that this notebook can be used to study any state.
You’ll find sheets to help your student discover more about their state’s:
- Symbols
- Capital
- Economics
- History
- Natural Resources
- Geography
- Population
- Jobs
It really offers a fabulous overview of all areas of a state.
The notebook pages have space to draw pictures or glue down tangible finds. There are plenty of lines for writing about the topic, and summarizing the completed research.
In the back, there are sheets to record field trips to various types of places. These include museums, the state capital, natural sites, and more. We haven’t yet taken a field trip to one of these sites since receiving the notebook, but my son is working on the preliminary research for a historical site. He is learning about Lewis and Clark’s trip through Washington, and the Corps of Discovery’s May 2, 1806, campsite silhouettes that are on display near Dayton.
We went here once before, but he was too young to really appreciate the historical significance at that point. He’s been enjoying learning more about each of the statues and the role they played in the Lewis and Clark expedition.
Here’s a peek at what the field trip forms look like:
How We Used This State History Notebook
I had my son work on this notebook four days each week. Two days he spent researching and the other two he worked in the notebook. This allowed him to do two pages each week, one for each of the topics he researched.
Writing is a struggle for this particular child, so I really minimized the amount I required him to write. The rest of the facts he told me orally. I love that aspect of homeschooling – you really can adjust and adapt to meet each of your kids where they are!
My son really enjoyed the research component. It was his first research project, so we did a lot of learning about how to research. We have a couple of books on Washington that we were able to use, and we also used online resources.
What I Thought About Chronicles of __ State History Notebook
I really appreciate the flexibility of this product. It can be used for any state.
It’s so thorough. The students learn much about their state while doing the research and completing the activities. I’ve seen other state history products that are very shallow in nature. They just talk about symbols and that’s it.
This is not the case with Chronicles of ___ State History Notebook. The students get a well-rounded approach to learning more about their state. It tackles tougher concepts like industries (there’s even a page for showing the manufacturing process!) and government.
I’m looking forward to continuing to work through this product with my son.
If you have a student ready to tackle state history, I highly recommend this product!
I was one of several Crew members reviewing products from Hewitt Homeschool Resources. They have some amazing homeschooling products, including amazing Lightning Lit sets. (You can see my previous review of Grade 1 Lightning Lit.)
