Life is too crazy to deal with complicated curriculum. I definitely prefer to keep things simple. So, when I had the chance to review a 5th Grade Entire School Year Curriculum from Homeschool Easy, I was eager to check it out.
After learning a bit more about this curriculum, I decided to try it out with my fifth grade daughter, Ellie. She likes being able to see exactly what needs done each day for school, and doesn’t mind doing worksheets.
What Is This Product?
Homeschool Easy is a digital product. It is a simple, worksheet based curriculum for an entire year. I received a .zip file. After I got it extracted, I was able to navigate between classes easily.
Each folder is carefully organized. Here’s a peek at the 5th Grade spelling folder:
At the start of each week, you can open each folder, print the material, and have it ready for your child. It’s fairly simple to keep track of, and won’t take a lot of work from you on organization or research.
Before you start diving in, make sure you take a moment to review the “How to Use Homeschool Easy” PDF and the overview for your grade level. This was very informative, and provided great information.
How Did We Use This Product?
Since we reviewed this product while we were down at Missionary Acres for the summer, I wasn’t able to use it exactly as intended. You see, I didn’t bring a printer down. And, I didn’t want to go to Office Depot and pay for prints. So, I had my daughter sit next to the computer and work off of there.
She struggled doing math this way, so I ended up creating worksheets for this by writing the questions on a piece of paper. Then, Ellie could work through them on paper:
I’m definitely looking forward to getting back home and being able to print things out. It’ll make it much simpler! But, I’m thankful we still found a way to make it work.
Though this curriculum is all worksheet based, there was still room for creativity. While Ellie was learning about states of matter, one of her science lessons was to create a Changes in States of Matter Diagram. Here’s what she did:
There are also several chapter books that students read. We didn’t yet dive into this section of the curriuclum, because we didn’t bring most of our books down here and we didn’t have access to a library. However, Ellie loves to read, so we will make up this time by having her speed through a couple of the books that’s she’s already read (Charlotte’s Web and Holes.)
For each book, there are questions and vocabulary worksheets. I’ll also have her do a creative project, since she really enjoys those.
What Did We Think of This Product?
If you’re looking for a fancy homeschool program, this is not it. But, if you’re in a crazy season of life where you just need to keep things simple, I highly recommend Homeschool Easy.
It covers the basic in an age-appropriate way. The curriculum covered key concepts for all subject areas. My daughter learned a lot. Many of the lessons required her to look at Britannica Kids (access was included) or watch a video to supplement.
You aren’t going to be able to turn your child loose and have them complete this entirely independently, but there are many components they can do on their own. Learning to work independently is important, and this curriculum can help you move in that direction.
My daughter wished there were more creative elements integrated into the program. However, she’s creative and came up with several ideas on her own. So she just extended her learning that way.
I know that this would not be a great fit for every student. However, my daughter is one who really enjoys just getting her work done and moving on. By being able to see what she had to do, it was very straightforward for her and she appreciated that. She could get started without waiting for me, which was nice.
