Baby Calf #2

March 25, 2015 Lisa

That wasn’t a long wait!

Epi had her calf this morning. Another bull. Jeffrey hasn’t yet decided on a name.

This one required a little more work than Shadow. Epi’s teats were super engorged and the little bull couldn’t get a good grip on nursing. After watching for a while, we noticed that Annie was pushing Epi away from the baby and taking a dominant stanch in the pen.

So I created a makeshift pen for Epi and her baby. Before moving her in to it, I took her to the stanchion first and milked out quite a bit to relieve her teats. Now the are smaller and the baby can handle them. It was a crazy morning, but both cow and calf are doing well. And I have some colostrum in a bottle in case the next calf needs it for some reason.
