Calf #3

March 27, 2015 Lisa

Apparently the bull didn’t waste any time at all last June. I was surprised to see bull number three standing next to Maggie this morning.

Since I currently have Epi and Shade separated, I’m going to wait until tomorrow to start milking. At that point, I’ll move Shade and Shadow to calf pens and start bottle feeding them.

I’ll move Maggie and Blackie to the pen Epi is in until Tuesday, and then I’ll be milking all three. I’m looking forward to the milk, and have my milking pan and some gallon hard presently being washed and sanitized in the dishwasher.

Then I’ll keep my three milk cows together until the grass gets a couple of inches of new growth and they will go out in the pasture along with the two steers from last year.

Rusty Red Bull will stay enclosed until June when he will once again join the ladies.

The calves will stay in the barn for three months until they are completely weaned, and then they will get moved to a small section of pasture away from the big cows (don’t want nursing to resume!)

The plans  are in place, now we will see how they all pan out!
