Phew! July is almost over and we’ve been in prep mode for the upcoming school year.
Every July, the family and I redo our:
- Chore Charts
- School Subject Lists
- Annual Meal Plan
- Memory Hymn List
This helps keep the school year on track and eliminates many of the decisions I have to make.
Each month, we pick one hymn to memorize. We sing this song twice each day, once during our morning Bible Time and once at night.
It’s amazing how just the repetition of singing will help everyone learn all the words in a month.
How We Selected Memory Hymns for This Year
We’ve picked hymns in a variety of ways before. Our first several years, we picked one from each section of our church’s hymnal.
Then we picked songs my husband and I thought were important ones for the kids to learn.
Last year we used 101 Hymn Stories to make our selection. And we were planning on using that again. But…
We decided to get the kids more involved. So, we asked them to each pick a song for us to learn this year. We spread those selections out throughout the next twelve months.
Then we filled in the remaining months. We recently got several copies of a (aff. link =>)Singspiration Song Book from a friend, and for the first time we’ll have enough books for all the reading kids. Many of the “extra” songs were selected from this book.
Our Selection of Memory Hymns for 2018-2019
Here’s what we plan on memorizing this year. My oldest will play the recorder, and the rest of us will raise our voices in a joyful noise!
- August: The Bible Stands
- September: There’s Power in the Blood
- October: He Is King (My three year old picked this song, and since we already know it I figured it’d be perfect for the month we welcome the new baby!!!)
- November: Tell Me the Story of Jesus
- December: Angels We Have Heard on High
- January: The New Year
- February: Room at the Cross for You
- March: My Sins Are Gone
- April: He Lives
- May: Surely Goodness and Mercy
- June: He’s Got the Whole World in His Hands
- July: America the Beautiful
I’m looking forward to practicing these songs this year!
