Are you looking for a sweet picture book to point your vehicle admiring kids towards God? My kids have certainly been enjoying God is Better than Trucks by Sarah Reju. Published by Christian Focus, this alphabet book has been fun to review!
What Is God is Better than Trucks?
This picture book shares a vehicle starting with each letter of the alphabet. Each page also shares a feature of the vehicle, like what it does.
Then, it points out why God is better than that particular vehicle. There are also Bible verses for each entry to help explain why God is better.
Here is a sample page so you can see how it all works together:
The book offers a combination of information about vehicles, and basic knowledge about God and His creation.
Quality of the Book
This hardcover book held up well to a lot of reading. The pages are bright and the illustrations are engaging.
How We Used This Book
When we first received the book, I read it aloud to my littles. Some of my middles gathered around.
That first time, we just read it straight through.
That day for Family Reading Time, my five year old son anxiously selected this book and sat still and flipped page after page, looking eagerly at each page.
A few days later, we started it again. This time we read through it slowly, just a few pages at a time. We looked up the Bible verses, discussed the principles, and really dove a bit deeper.
My young kids alternated who got to read this book for Family Reading Time.
Using God is Better than Trucks as a Writing Prompt
I really enjoy having my kids mimic the writing and illustration style in a book on their own. This teaches them to pay attention to detail, see how different authors do things, and helps them ignite their creativity.
So, one day during Family Writing Time, I gave my kids the option of creating their own additional page to this book.
Three of them decided to try. They had a hard time brainstorming vehicles that weren’t in the book (there were some awesome selections in there!)
One decided to go with a Aircraft carrier like Daddy served on in the Navy. One opted for a SUV. And one picked a snow plow.
Then they brainstormed ways that God was better than those things.
They decided that God can:
- Make the snow
- Created the whole ocean
- Carry more than eight people (:D)
This was a fun extension activity to get more out of the book.
What We Thought of God is Better than Trucks
My family really enjoyed this book! It was a great starting point to learn more about the attributes of God. The words and recommended verses sparked a lot of discussion.
We talked about how God is always with us. And how He knows everything. There are many truths in these pages!
When I asked them what their favorite parts were, here is what some of my kids said:
- Two Year Old Son: the fire truck
- Four Year Old Daughter: the kayak
- Five Year Old Son: the garbage truck and the quick race car
If you have kids who enjoy learning about God and looking at all types of cars and trucks, I highly recommend this picture book!
