Grammar is important! And a little bit of daily practice helps younger kids master grammatical concepts. The daily component is why I was thrilled to have my seven-year-old daughter review Easy Grammar: Grade 1 from Easy Grammar Systems .
What Is Easy Grammar: Grade 1?
A softback workbook, this product introduces students in first grade to essential grammar concepts. It contains 180 lessons, each meant to take only 5-10 minutes. These short lessons help keep students engaged.
The lessons start off with simple material, covering basic punctuation and capitalization rules. As the student progresses through the lessons, they slowly get more advanced. They do cycle back and offer plenty of review to help strengthen neural paths and ensure mastery.
In addition to punctuation and capitalization, students in first grade will learn about many grammar topics, such as:
- Combining sentences
- Parts of speech
- Using quotation marks
- Plural and possessive nouns
- Hyphenating
Any many additional skills.
We received the Teacher Edition. However, the student pages are contained within the Teacher Edition, and the license allows you to print out additional copies for your other students if desired. If you prefer, you can also purchase a second Student Edition, which just has the student pages.
The Teacher Pages
At the beginning of the book, you will find an introduction that explains how the book works. There are a couple of pages of teacher notes, to help you use this product with your children. A scope and sequence is included, to show you the topics covered.
Next, you will find the daily lessons. These provide more detailed directions for the lessons than is included in the student pages.
After the lessons, you will find the student pages. Each of the daily lessons has four quick components:
- Capitalization
- Punctuation
- Lesson
- Sentence (sentence formation for the first half of the year and sentence combining the second half)
The consistent nature of these lessons made them very predictable for my daughter. She appreciated how short they were, and always knowing what to expect. Here she is working on one of the student pages. In the following picture, you can see a completed one. It was one of the first lessons, and she was still working on getting her question marks turned the right way then… 😀
Answer Key
After the student lessons, you will find the answer key. These are written in super tiny print, but they are all there!
How We Used Easy Grammar: Grade 1
I had my daughter complete one lesson each school day (which is 4 days/week in our house.) I presented the information from the teacher lesson, then she found her student page.
She only took a couple of minutes each day to do her part. Most days it was about five or six.
When she was finished, I quickly graded her work and reviewed anything that needed extra practice.
What We Thought of Easy Grammar: Grade 1
I really appreciated the short, simple layout of this product. It was easy to use, but still helped move students along the path to mastery. It was a great fit for this child.
This is totally a product I can see myself using with my other kids, to help them get a solid foundation of grammar. It’s a low-time commitment addition to the curriculum, which is always important when you’re homeschooling multiple kiddos.
I didn’t like having the student pages in the middle. I should have copied them and just handed them to her each day, but I wasn’t that organized when we started. So, I just used two bookmarks. One was for my page and one was for hers. We made it work!
All in all, I recommend this product if you are looking for a low-key way to teach grammar.
