Memorizing Hymns: 2019-2020 Edition

August 16, 2019 Lisa Tanner

Each month, my family works on memorizing hymns. Every summer, my husband and I select the memory hymns for the upcoming school year.

We started this tradition several years back, and it has been such a blessing to fill our home and hearts with these wonderful songs.

By singing the hymn of the month twice each day, we typically have it memorized by the end of the month. Usuaully, I have the kids learn a verse each week. So on the first week, we sing verse one (and the chorus) twice a day. The next week we add in verse two.

That means on week two we sing verses 1 and 2, and the chorus twice.

Each week, we add on another. Once all the verses are in, we just sing the whole thing.

Of course, there are some hymns with more than four verses. For these, I add in a new verse every few days. It works out.

To learn more about how teach the hymns to our kids, see this post:

7 Tips for Memorizing Hymns with Kids

For the past couple of years, my oldest daughter has been accompanying us on the recorder. It’s so sweet to hear her practicing. We love having these songs fill the house.

Can You Find the Pattern?

This year, all of our hymns (except the Christmas, Easter, and Patriotic selections) were selected for one specific reason. Do you know what it is?

Leave your thoughts in the comments below…I’ll be checking in and seeing if anyone gets it. If they do, I’ll update this post accordingly!

Wondering what hymns we’ve memorized in the past?

You can find them all in these posts. You will notice a few repeats over the years. There are some we want to be sure and teach our younger kids as well, so we are rotating some of our favorites back into the lineup.
